Shanti Shanti

This series of miniatures takes from the battle and celebratory scenes I grew up seeing in traditional South Asian miniature styles in my home, combined with characters from decided orientalist Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book and other Mowgli stories. Placed in the Punjabi Himalayan Mountains and lush river-filled valleys of my Partition-torn heritage, they attempt to turn the Global North narrative and othering of brown folk on its head: Women of power dance, play, and hunt with Sher Khan, Baghira, Bhalu and others mauling British officers. Women and animals winning for once.
